My policy for accepting PhD applicants as advisees

I get many requests to advise prospective PhD students. You must meet the following criteria for me to consider your request. I will not respond to email requests which do not meet the following requirements:

  1. You must demonstrate that you have carefully reviewed all the material for prospective PhD students that is on the UVic Economics website: https://www.uvic.ca/socialsciences/economics/graduate/home/programs/phd/index.php

  2. You must not email me questions which are clearly answered on the UVic Economics website (including questions about funding, pre-requisites, etc.)

  3. You must have graduated (or be nearing graduation) with good grades from a Master’s program in economics, statistics, math, physics, engineering, or public policy (with a heavy quantitative element). I may also consider students who have graduated (or are nearing graduation) with distinction from a well-ranked Bachelor of Economics program.

Provided you meet all the above criteria, please email me your request. For me to consider your request, your email should include the following:

  • Evidence that you meet the aforementioned requirements, including a copy of your most recent transcript(s) and a copy of any degrees held

  • Your current curriculum vitae

  • Your Statement of Purpose / Statement of Research Interests, which should articulate your motivation for doing a PhD and your particular fields of interest, and should also show a clear alignment with my research agenda

  • A brief note on why you think I might be a good fit as your advisor

  • A list of the other programs to which you are applying or considering applying

Provided you meet the requirements and follow these instructions, you can expect a reply within one to two weeks
